A Message To Our ParentsUpdated Saturday November 19, 2016 by Dr. Phillips Little League.
As we prepare for a new season this is a natural time to reflect on the role everyone plays in making Dr Phillips Little League a positive experience for all our participants. This great article on Yahoo sports touches on the power of a parent's words:
Simply, six words are potentially transformative for anyone earnest in being an outstanding parent: "I love to watch you play".
Hear that, parents? That's it. That's all we have to say on the drive home after a game or practice. And no, you cannot add a conjunction. "I love to watch you play, son, and here are three suggestions to help improve."
The conjunction won't cut it. Just the six words, according to the study. We challenge you to find the discipline to execute the delivery of these six, potentially transforming words. For many of you, like me, it will require resolve, and practice. But here's the best part: It's true. Deep down, isn't that what we all starve for? Loving acknowledgement from our parents, with no conjunctions.
But the fruits are worth it. You'll notice such a warmth in the car after you make the comment. Disarming might occur with your child, if you had shown signs of overzealousness in the past. And the curious thing, the comment will often precipitate a deep, meaningful conversation subsequent to delivery, inspired and led by the child athlete. Isn't that what we are all after, anyway? Real, meaningful dialogue with the relationships that matter most in life.
Give it a try & See what happens!
